xAI Accused of Using Child Abuse Material to Train Grok AI, Lawsuit Claims

Elon Musk's artificial intelligence company, xAI, has been accused of training its Grok AI models using child sexual abuse material (CSAM). The allegations were detailed in a lawsuit filed on Wednesday by a plaintiff identified as Jane Doe.

The lawsuit states that Doe was a preschool-age child in the early 2000s when she was repeatedly sexually assaulted to create CSAM for sale to online pedophiles. Her images have since been hashed by organizations like the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) and the Canadian Centre for Child Protection (CCCP). Doe receives alerts from the U.S. Department of Justice Victim Notification System whenever she may be a victim in a new criminal investigation.

Despite receiving numerous alerts, Doe was reportedly shocked when the CCCP notified her that her likeness had been identified in AI-generated CSAM produced by xAI. The complaint alleges that Doe experienced re-traumatization, citing messages found on online forums "between offenders chatting about creating AI generated CSAM of Plaintiff and other similarly situated known, legacy, victims of CSAM."

This case highlights significant ethical and legal challenges surrounding the data used to train artificial intelligence systems. Regulators and courts are continuing to investigate the extent of these issues within the AI industry. The lawsuit may prompt further scrutiny into xAI's data collection and processing methods for its Grok models.
