Xavier Ochsner College of Medicine Receives Preliminary Accreditation
The Xavier Ochsner College of Medicine, the only HBCU medical school in the Gulf South, has obtained preliminary accreditation and will begin recruiting its inaugural class.

Xavier Ochsner College of Medicine, the sole historically Black college of medicine (HBCU) in the Gulf South region, has been granted preliminary accreditation by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME). This approval allows the institution to begin recruiting students for its inaugural class of 2027 in the coming weeks.
The medical school is a collaboration between Xavier University of Louisiana and Ochsner Health, two established New Orleans institutions. This partnership builds upon decades of joint efforts in education, research, and healthcare. Xavier University of Louisiana brings a century-long legacy of excellence in STEM education and a strong track record of preparing students for medical school, while Ochsner Health is a leading academic health system with over 80 years of community service experience.
The accreditation arrives at a critical juncture as the United States anticipates a significant physician shortage, projected to exceed 141,000 by 2038. Louisiana is among the states most affected, with 60 of its 64 parishes designated as Health Professional Shortage Areas.
Reynold Verret, Ph.D., president of Xavier University of Louisiana, described the development as a "historic moment." He emphasized that the new medical school will expand opportunities for individuals to pursue careers in medicine, strengthen the communities these physicians will serve, and contribute to shaping the future of healthcare.
