Xbox enables conversion of physical game discs to digital licenses

Microsoft's Xbox consoles are introducing a new program that enables players to create digital entitlements from their physical game discs. The program, currently in testing with Xbox Insiders, allows players to claim a digital entitlement for most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games simply by inserting the disc into a console and launching the game.

Once the digital entitlement is claimed, the game can be played digitally without ever needing to insert the disc again. The game remains playable as long as the user or a member of their family account is logged in. The digital entitlement also grants access to features like Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming for supported titles.

According to Microsoft, the physical game disc will continue to function as it always has even after the digital entitlement is claimed. However, it is important to note that there is only one revokable license per game disc. If the disc is sold or loaned to a friend, the digital entitlement may be transferred to a new account when someone else inserts the disc into their console.

The program is expected to launch widely soon, aiming to merge the convenience of digital gaming with the permanence of physical ownership.
