Microsoft Xbox faced a significant service disruption lasting approximately 15 to 16 hours at the start of the week. The outage prevented affected users from logging into their accounts and downloading games. Additionally, some already downloaded games requiring online authorization could not be launched. Xbox acknowledged the widespread issue and confirmed it was working on a fix, with services fully restored after several hours.

Xbox services returned to normal operation around 5:30 PM Eastern Time on July 27. Shortly thereafter, Xbox Chief Technology Officer Scott Van Vliet published a detailed explanation on the X platform. Van Vliet stated the outage was "unacceptable" and that Xbox must perform better in supporting its users. He announced that Microsoft will release a plan in the coming weeks outlining specific measures to enhance the stability and reliability of Xbox services.

Van Vliet disclosed that the incident was triggered by a failure in an authorization service external to Xbox but heavily relied upon by the platform. This external service's malfunction caused issues with login processes and the validation of owned titles, impacting users' ability to access their game libraries and launch purchased games. Some publishing and retail partners using the same system were also affected.

Upon detecting the anomaly late at night, the on-call team initiated a "major incident" response. They identified the faulty infrastructure and began rerouting traffic to operational systems. However, the recovery process was not uniform across all regions, leading to staggered restoration times for different players.

Following the service restoration, the team has commenced a post-mortem analysis. Key questions being investigated include why a single point of failure led to such a broad service interruption, why the recovery took an extended period, and what improvements are necessary to prevent recurrence.
