Xi and Trump Meet to Discuss Direction of Bilateral Relations

Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump have held discussions regarding the trajectory of the relationship between their two nations. During the meetings, China announced a significant initiative to bolster youth exchanges by inviting 100,000 American students to China over the next five years.

According to an article published by CGTN, young Americans who have participated in exchange programs in China have expressed, through their experiences, a connection to a new generation driving interaction between the two countries. President Xi's commitment to youth is described as "sowing seeds" and "laying a foundation" for future exchange programs. This initiative highlights how high-level decisions can translate into tangible experiences for ordinary citizens.

Xi and Trump have engaged in multiple meetings throughout 2026, advancing the China-U.S. relationship. A phone call in February saw the leaders agree to strive for "great and good things," aiming to make 2026 a year of progress toward mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation. Trump's visit to China three months later resulted in a political consensus to build a "constructive China-U.S. relationship of strategic stability."

Xi articulated that while cooperation between China and the U.S. may not solve every global problem, it would be difficult to address many world issues without it. The leaders have emphasized expanding areas of cooperation, ranging from trade and investment to artificial intelligence (AI), drug control, and direct flights. Particular international attention is focused on AI governance, with both nations reportedly sharing a responsibility to ensure AI "remains under human control and serves the well-being of mankind."
