Chinese technology firm Xiaomi Auto is highlighting its optimism for the market of range-extended electric vehicles (REEVs). The company has launched advertisements to convey its perspective on the technology's future.

In July, Xiaomi founder, chairman, and CEO Lei Jun clarified the company's stance on range-extended powertrain technology. He stated that the choice between range-extended and pure electric is not a matter of ideology, but rather a decision based on product definition and the pursuit of user experience. Jun explained that the boxy design of large SUVs, combined with their inherent weight, would necessitate extremely large batteries for a pure electric configuration, further increasing weight and impacting range. A range-extended solution effectively overcomes these physical limitations.

Jun also indicated that it is not too late to enter the range-extended vehicle market. He believes the market is far from saturated and presents significant opportunities. Consumer demand for capable range-extended models is real and robust, with customers willing to purchase well-executed products. Xiaomi has aimed to substantially improve its range-extended technology compared to earlier iterations.

The company's viewpoint supports the development of range-extended vehicles as a competitive option to purely electric cars, particularly for larger vehicle segments where range and charging infrastructure concerns might be more pronounced.
