Xiaomi CEO Explains Range Extender Choice Over Pure Electric for SUV

Xiaomi founder, Chairman, and CEO Lei Jun has addressed the powertrain choices for the company's upcoming "Pengcheng" series of large SUVs, explaining why the vehicles will primarily utilize a range extender setup instead of a purely electric drive.

Lei Jun cited three main reasons for this decision. Firstly, the vehicle's "boxy" design inherently creates significant aerodynamic drag. Secondly, as a full-size SUV, the vehicle is already substantial in weight. Attempting to achieve a long driving range with a purely electric model would necessitate an exceptionally large battery.

This oversized battery would, in turn, add considerable weight to the vehicle. The CEO noted that this increased weight would ironically hinder the battery's efficiency, negatively impacting the overall driving range. The range extender configuration is thus seen as a more practical solution for balancing weight, space, and range.

The "Pengcheng" designation refers to Xiaomi's new SUV lineup, which emphasizes intelligent and adaptable interior space. It will be available in both five- and seven-seater configurations, both featuring the range extender powertrain. Extensive testing has been conducted, with 566 test vehicles accumulating over 4.2 million kilometers in various conditions.
