xMEMS, a technology company, has unveiled the XMC-1200, which it claims is the world's smallest active microfan. The device is engineered specifically for augmented reality (AR) and extended reality (XR) smart glasses, where thermal management is crucial for maintaining performance and user comfort.

The XMC-1200 measures just 46 mm² and utilizes a solid-state microcooling technology to directly cool heat-generating components. This approach allows for integration into space-constrained areas, such as smart glasses' temples. When paired with the Astra2 drive ASIC, the system operates with a typical power consumption of only 70 mW and can achieve a temperature reduction of up to 10°C under a 1W thermal load.

This microfan aims to prevent overheating issues that can lead to shutdowns or performance throttling in smart glasses. Additionally, it is expected to enhance wearability by dissipating heat before it reaches the surface of the glasses and comes into contact with the user's skin, thereby improving comfort during extended use.

Manufacturers of AR and XR smart glasses can request engineering samples of the XMC-1200 from xMEMS. Mass production is slated to begin in the fourth quarter of 2027, indicating a phased rollout and potential integration into upcoming consumer devices.
