XPeng Consolidates Product Lines to Improve Efficiency
Automaker XPeng has reportedly reduced its product lines from four to two. The move aims to focus R&D resources and enhance profitability amid market pressures.
Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer XPeng has consolidated its product lines from four down to two, according to industry sources. The previous F, D, I, and G product lines have now been merged into just the G and D lines, with models from the I and F lines integrated into the G line.
The G line previously handled large SUVs like the XPeng GX and G9L, while the F line produced sedans such as the P-series. The D line is home to the MONA series, and the I line was responsible for overseas models. Under the new structure, the MONA series remains with the D line, while all other models are consolidated under the G line.
The MONA series, positioned in the 100,000-150,000 yuan market segment, has been a sales pillar for XPeng, contributing over a third of its sales in the first eight months of the year. The GX model has been a key driver for the brand's upward trajectory, with over 20,000 units delivered since its launch in late May.
Accompanying the product line consolidation are personnel adjustments. The former head of the F line is now responsible for product definition within the G line, and the former head of the I line has transitioned to managing XPeng's international affairs, excluding overseas sales.
XPeng's product lines encompass product definition and R&D functions. Reducing the lines from four to two is expected to allow for more focused R&D resource allocation, potentially leading to cost reductions and avoiding internal competition between different product positioning and pricing strategies. Chinese automakers have generally faced challenges with sluggish sales growth and rising raw material costs this year.
The company's second-quarter financial results showed a narrowed loss, but vehicle gross margin remained low, partly due to the high sales contribution from more affordable models like the MONA M03. The consolidation of product lines and focused resources may help XPeng improve its automotive business margins, mirroring similar efficiency-boosting strategies implemented by competitors like Li Xiang and Geely.
