XPeng Earns Over 1 Billion Yuan from Carbon Credit Sales
Chinese electric vehicle maker XPeng has generated over 1 billion yuan in revenue from carbon credit transactions with international automakers, including Porsche.
XPeng, a Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer, has reportedly accumulated over 1 billion yuan (approximately $137 million USD) in revenue through carbon credit sales. The company has established trading partnerships for these credits with several international automakers, including Porsche, covering markets such as the European Union, the UK, and Australia.
This revenue stream comes as XPeng's overseas sales surpassed 20,000 units in the second quarter of the year, marking an 81% year-over-year increase. The expansion in international sales has allowed XPeng to accumulate a significant volume of carbon credits, contributing to a diversified revenue structure that also includes vehicle sales and technology services.
Carbon credit systems are designed to penalize manufacturers with higher average vehicle emissions and incentivize the production of lower-emission vehicles. Automakers exceeding emission limits can avoid substantial fines by purchasing credits from manufacturers with surplus allowances, such as XPeng.
Globally, automakers have formed credit pools to facilitate trading. China also operates a "dual credit" policy that rewards fuel efficiency improvements and the production of new energy vehicles, aiming to reduce overall carbon emissions.
