XPeng launches automated production line for humanoid robots

XPeng announced Tuesday the commencement of operations for its automated humanoid robot production line. The company's first IRON humanoid robot successfully completed automated final assembly and autonomously exited the production line, signaling XPeng's shift from research and development towards mass production.

The production line was designed and built by XPeng's internal team. The company stated that it integrates manufacturing and quality control systems adapted from the automotive industry to meet the precision requirements for humanoid robot assembly. Over 80% of the line's core processes are automated, according to XPeng.

Humanoid robots are in the early stages of commercialization, with many products yet to achieve large-scale production. Automated assembly lines could enhance manufacturing efficiency and product consistency, but the actual efficiency and cost of mass-producing complex robots remain to be tested.

XPeng positions IRON as part of its physical AI strategy, aiming for a unified hardware and software platform. The robot features 76 degrees of freedom and is powered by three Turing AI chips for significant local processing power. XPeng stated the robot can perceive its environment and perform tasks without remote human control.

Under XPeng's current roadmap, scaled production for IRON is anticipated by the end of 2026, with commercial deliveries expected in 2027. The company recently secured over $900 million in funding for its robotics division. CEO He Xiaopeng emphasized the goal of achieving mass production to deliver real value, rather than just demonstrations.
