Xpeng says it can adapt driver-assist AI for Europe with limited data

Guangzhou-based Xpeng, an electric vehicle manufacturer and Volkswagen partner in China, announced its capability to adapt its advanced driver-assistance software for European markets with limited local data. The company claims its system can be fine-tuned from one European country to another in approximately two weeks, using as little as one ten-thousandth of the data normally required to train its underlying AI models.

Xpeng aims to introduce its Navigation Guided Pilot system in Europe by 2027. However, the company must first demonstrate the system's reliability under European conditions, including varying traffic rules and interactions with pedestrians and cyclists. The rollout is contingent on regulatory approval, as vehicle safety and automated driving technologies are regulated at the EU level.

The company has already launched in Spain and partnered with a UK distributor. Xpeng also has a joint development agreement with Volkswagen for two smart electric vehicles intended for the Chinese market.
