Y Combinator's Latest Cohort Shifts Focus to Physical AI and Robotics

Y Combinator's Winter 2026 cohort signals a pronounced and growing bet on physical AI.

Out of 199 companies spanning 15 categories, one in eight are building something physical. Robotics, drones, wearables, and space hardware represent a concentration of hard-tech bets that stands out against YC's historically software-heavy mix. Industrials & defense, the third-largest category in the batch, doubled from 17 companies in the previous cohort to 35 in W26.

However, the shift extends beyond hardware. AI-native services, where AI performs a job end-to-end and humans supervise the output, are increasingly competing with traditional AI-enhanced software tools. Additionally, 39 companies are building the AI infrastructure layer that the rest of the batch will depend on.

According to CB Insights' analysis, physical AI systems are facing training data scarcity, with many W26 companies building infrastructure to address this, anticipating that data will not automatically follow hardware adoption. Notably, energy infrastructure solutions have emerged as a distinct trend, driven by AI's own escalating energy demands. Legal AI is also moving towards AI-native law firms rather than traditional software vendors.
