Young Adults Distrust AI Leaders

A new poll conducted by CNBC and Generation Lab indicates that young Americans are skeptical of artificial intelligence and the individuals steering its development.

Notably, nearly three-quarters (76%) of respondents under 35 years old are calling for AI regulation, either by the government or an "independent expert body." Additionally, 60% oppose the construction of new data centers.

The poll surveyed young individuals on their trust in nine prominent figures in the AI sector, including eight tech CEOs. None of these leaders garnered majority trust. Palantir's Peter Thiel and Alex Karp received the lowest trust ratings at 79% and 81% respectively. Even Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, the most trusted figure on the list, only achieved 35% trust. Other leaders with low trust included OpenAI's Sam Altman, SpaceX's Elon Musk, Meta's Mark Zuckerberg, Nvidia's Jensen Huang, Alphabet's Sundar Pichai, and Anthropic's Dario Amodei.

This lack of faith in AI leadership also extends to perceptions of AI's impact. Nearly half (45%) believe AI will negatively affect their careers, compared to just 10% who feel it will help. Young Americans' overall view of the national economy is also negative, with 80% rating it as poor.
