Young Adults Opt for Free Dates Amid Rising Dating Costs
Millions of young American adults are finding ways to circumvent rising dating expenses by choosing free meetups. A new survey from dating app Hily reveals generational differences in approach.

Dating in the United States has become significantly more expensive, prompting many young adults to seek more affordable options. According to a recent survey by dating app Hily, over one-third of Gen Z and two-fifths of Millennials have suggested a free date.
The survey, which polled 5,400 American Gen Z and Millennial daters, indicates a growing trend towards cost-free activities. Events like free promotional gatherings or park walks are gaining traction. Specifically, 17% of Gen Z individuals and 25% of Millennials reported being invited on a free date.
Despite the financial incentives, not everyone embraces the concept of free dates. Women, in particular, have expressed reservations. 44% of Gen Z women and 39% of Millennial women found free dates unappealing or indicative of low effort. They also expressed the sentiment that individuals unable to afford at least part of a date should refrain from asking someone out.
These increasing costs are also impacting the frequency of dating. Previous research from BMO Financial Group highlighted a 32% year-over-year increase in average date night spending for Millennials, with Gen Z also seeing rising expenses. A significant number of singles find traditional date nights no longer financially viable, leading to fewer dates or a shift towards entirely free activities.
