Young Indians Oppose Social Media Bans, Citing Isolation and Hindrance to Social Work

A discussion hosted by IndiaTech publication Medianama on July 31 in New Delhi highlighted strong opposition from young people to proposed social media bans and restrictions. Participants argued that such measures would not only isolate them from vital information but also impede youth-led social initiatives and their ability to connect with peers.

Students and activists present at the roundtable emphasized the crucial role of social media in accessing knowledge, particularly for underprivileged communities. They stated that restricting internet access would cut off young people from significant learning opportunities and information sources that are often more readily available online than through traditional means.

Concerns were also raised about how social media restrictions could stifle youth-led social work. Speakers noted that online platforms are essential for young individuals aiming to address societal issues and organize efforts. Limiting access to these platforms would hinder their capacity to reach audiences and mobilize support for their causes.

Furthermore, the effectiveness of proposed age verification systems was questioned. The young participants asserted that children are adept at bypassing technological safeguards, citing an example of a 13-year-old circumventing Roblox's facial recognition using a phone screenshot. They also pointed out that simple mathematical questions used for age verification can be easily solved with calculators, rendering them ineffective.

The discussion concluded by underscoring the value of online spaces for young people to express themselves, build confidence, and explore their identities. Participants highlighted that the internet provides a platform to connect with like-minded individuals and gain the courage to voice opinions both online and offline, suggesting that restrictions would jeopardize these essential interactions and avenues for self-discovery.
