Individuals like Ange, a 32-year-old freelance consultant, are moving away from conventional nine-to-five jobs, embracing flexible "side quests" and fractional professional roles to navigate the rising cost of living and the potential impact of artificial intelligence.

Experts suggest that workplace disillusionment may stem from a rational reassessment of the value employees receive for their labor. Stephanie Bilderback, an assistant professor of management, notes that many feel the system is working against them, making traditional markers of success, such as homeownership, increasingly unattainable.
