The Senckenberg Research Institute and Natural History Museum in Frankfurt hosted the Rhein-Main West regional competition for Jugend forscht, a youth science contest. Seven student projects were recognized on Tuesday from a total of 29 entries submitted by 60 young researchers.

The winning projects covered diverse topics, including the use of artificial intelligence to aid English language learning in developing countries, a method for treating diastolic heart failure, a novel shock-absorbing polymer, and an efficient insulation material made from wood powder. Several projects also explored astronomy, investigating double star systems and the impact of light pollution on celestial observations.

This marks the fifteenth year the Senckenberg Research Institute has organized the regional competition. Professor Andreas Mulch, Director of the Senckenberg Research Institute and Natural History Museum, highlighted the creativity and enthusiasm demonstrated by the participants, emphasizing the museum's role as an inspiring venue.

Senckenberg has partnered with Provadis, a private educational company, to co-organize the event since 2020. The competition has seen various partnership arrangements over the years, and Senckenberg is seeking a new partner for the 2026 season.

The top-performing projects have qualified for the state-level competition in Hessen, scheduled for March 26-27, 2025, in Darmstadt. Award recipients also received monetary prizes and other special commendations.
