YouTube adds stablecoin payout option for U.S. creators

YouTube has introduced the option for U.S.-based content creators to receive payouts via PayPal’s U.S. dollar-backed stablecoin, PYUSD. The feature operates through PayPal's existing Hyperwallet infrastructure, meaning YouTube does not directly handle digital assets or assume balance-sheet risk associated with cryptocurrency.

Having distributed over $100 billion to creators in the last four years, YouTube manages a massive recurring payment network. According to May Zabaneh, PayPal’s head of crypto, the integration allows for new payout flexibility without requiring YouTube to overhaul its core business systems. By embedding the option into the existing payout menu, the platform maintains a consistent user experience while expanding settlement choices.

Creators can opt to receive earnings in PYUSD, which then remain in their PayPal account or can be transferred to external addresses. This update does not replace traditional payout methods, which remain available to all users. The move reflects a broader trend among major platforms, such as Stripe and Google Cloud, to adopt stablecoins as efficient tools for cross-border money movement.

As regulatory frameworks for stablecoins continue to develop in the United States, industry analysts suggest that such integrations are increasingly viewed as infrastructure upgrades rather than speculative ventures. The success of this implementation will depend on adoption rates among the creator base, though the underlying technology is designed to handle high volumes of recurring, payroll-like transactions.
