YouTube AI Ad Disclosure Rules Clarified

YouTube has clarified its disclosure requirements for the use of AI-generated video content in advertisements. These updated guidelines are aimed at content creators and advertisers who utilize AI tools in their ad production processes. The core of the update focuses on determining when the depiction of realistic AI-generated elements—such as human-like avatars, events, or locations—necessitates a mandatory disclosure.

A new toggle for AI usage is now available in YouTube Studio under the "Attributes" section during upload. The requirement specifically applies when AI causes a real person to appear to say or do something they did not, or when it alters footage of a real event or place. Similarly, realistically generated scenes that did not occur must also be disclosed.

Conversely, content that is clearly animated or unrealistic, the application of beauty filters, color grading, or using AI solely for scriptwriting or thumbnail generation does not require disclosure. Cloning one's own voice for voiceovers or using AI as production assistance also falls outside the mandatory disclosure rules.

The disclosure label is not intended to impact content distribution or monetization eligibility. However, repeated failure to comply with disclosure obligations could lead to the suspension of monetization. YouTube has confirmed that these policies are subject to change, and users are advised to consult the official YouTube guidelines for the most current information.

Advertisers must also consider the integrated AI features within Google Ads tools, such as Performance Max campaigns. These tools may automatically generate video assets from existing materials, and their use as YouTube placements might also require disclosure.

CrePal, a company offering AI-driven advertising solutions, emphasizes the importance of adhering to these disclosure rules. For accurate and up-to-date information, content creators are urged to actively monitor the official policies and guidance from YouTube and Google.
