Researchers at Yunnan University have developed new perovskite solar cells capable of generating electricity underwater. This technology opens new avenues for energy harvesting in aquatic environments.

A research team led by Simin Ma at Yunnan University has developed a novel type of perovskite solar cell designed to operate underwater.

Perovskite solar cells offer advantages over traditional silicon cells, including lower manufacturing costs, flexibility, and the potential for higher energy conversion efficiency. However, a significant challenge has been their tendency to degrade rapidly.

While moisture is known to be detrimental to perovskites, making underwater application seem counterintuitive, these new cells are tuned to specific light wavelengths that penetrate water. Unlike silicon cells that rely on light easily absorbed at the surface, these perovskite cells can harness the light available in deeper water.

Furthermore, the study suggests that the cooler temperatures and lower light intensity underwater might actually help to extend the lifespan of these perovskite cells compared to their performance in above-ground conditions.
