Zelle Study Finds Generation Z Often Unpaid for Group Expenses
A recent Zelle report indicates that 76% of Generation Z consumers are not fully repaid after fronting money for group trips or events, leading to relationship strain.

A new study by Zelle reveals a trend among Generation Z consumers where upfront payments for group expenses often go unpaid. The "The Group Chat Is Lit. Settling Up Is Another Story" report, released in June, found that 76% of surveyed Gen Z individuals did not receive full reimbursement for costs they paid in advance for group travel or events.
The study further highlights the social consequences, with 55% of respondents stating these situations created tension or negatively impacted relationships. Perhaps more concerning, nearly half of the participants (47%) admitted to going into debt to cover collective expenses.
Denise Leonhard, general manager of Zelle, noted in a press release that shared experiences should foster connection, not debt or awkward social interactions. The findings come as Generation Z spends significantly on major events.
While half of all surveyed Americans spent under $2,500 per person on large events like the World Cup or Coachella, 37% of Gen Z consumers spent at least $2,501 on average, the highest expenditure among all generations surveyed.
