Zepto Delays IPO Amidst Shift to Profitability Over Discounts

Zepto, a prominent Indian quick commerce company, has deferred its planned Initial Public Offering (IPO) of $1.2 to $1.3 billion. The delay follows concerns raised by investors regarding the startup's valuation and its path to profitability, according to industry sources.

Investor skepticism reportedly stems from Zepto's private market valuation of $7 billion, which some mutual funds deemed unjustifiable when compared to the trading multiples of rivals like Blinkit and Swiggy's Instamart. Zepto's reported consolidated net loss jumped 26% year-on-year to INR 5,905 crore in FY26, a figure higher than its competitors, adding to valuation concerns.

In response to these pressures, Zepto is reportedly altering its strategy. The company has significantly reduced its reliance on deep discounts and is focusing more on customer retention rather than aggressive new customer acquisition. This shift is evidenced by a substantial increase in the minimum order value required for free delivery, which has been raised from INR 99 to INR 199 during normal hours, and even INR 299 during peak demand, aligning it with competitors.

Further underscoring this strategic pivot, Zepto has reintroduced a paid loyalty program, moving discounts and benefits behind a monthly subscription fee instead of offering them universally. While these measures aim to improve unit economics and boost the bottom line, they may risk alienating customers who prioritize lower prices and immediate savings, potentially driving them to competitors.

The company is currently in the process of raising INR 1,000 crore ahead of its proposed listing. Zepto maintains its commitment to listing in the near future, but the current market conditions and investor scrutiny necessitate a demonstration of sustainable profitability before it can proceed with its public offering.
