Zerodha enters investment banking sector

Indian brokerage firm Zerodha has expanded its services into investment banking. Zerodha Corporate Advisors, a subsidiary of the company, received approval from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) on September 1 to operate as a Category-I merchant banker. This allows the firm to advise companies on initial public offerings (IPOs), follow-on issues, and other capital market transactions.

The company is expected to launch its merchant banking operations within the next few months, with an initial focus on equity capital markets. This move into investment banking provides a new fee-based revenue stream for Zerodha, whose core broking business has faced pressure from reduced retail derivative activity and regulatory changes.

Investment banking differs significantly from Zerodha's established business, which centered on technology and accessibility for investors. Success in this new venture will require building relationships with founders, CFOs, and institutional investors, a different approach than serving a large retail client base.

Zerodha aims to bring its signature low-cost, "no-hard selling" approach to the investment banking world. While its extensive retail investor base may offer an advantage in IPOs by potentially boosting awareness and retail participation, building relationships with institutional investors will be crucial for long-term success.
