Zerodha Secures Investment Banking License Pathway
Indian discount brokerage Zerodha has applied for a Category-I investment banking license, aiming to expand into managing IPOs and M&A advisory services. The firm plans to leverage its extensive retail client base.

Zerodha, a prominent discount brokerage in India, is actively diversifying its business model by venturing into investment banking.
The company has submitted an application to the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) for a Category-I merchant banking license. This approval would allow Zerodha to manage initial public offerings (IPOs) and provide advisory services for mergers and acquisitions (M&A).
Zerodha intends to utilize its large base of over 6.8 million retail clients and significant high-net-worth individuals (HNIs) as a key differentiator. The strategy is to offer IPO-bound companies direct access to a substantial investor pool and valuable data.
This expansion into investment banking is part of a broader diversification effort, which also includes developing revenue streams from margin trading, wealth management, and secured lending against securities. These moves are driven by recent regulatory tightening and transaction tax increases that have impacted the derivatives trading business, aiming to create more stable and predictable long-term revenue.
