ZF LIFETEC is set to commence series production of a novel seat belt fabric incorporating an integrated infrared signature in August 2026. This innovation aims to enable vehicle cabin cameras to more accurately verify correct seat belt usage.
The new fabric, named "Infrared Belt," is designed to assist automotive manufacturers in improving occupant detection and meeting current and future safety regulations from assessment bodies like Euro NCAP. Unlike traditional buckle sensors, the technology is intended to confirm the belt's correct positioning across the occupant's body, thereby mitigating risks associated with improper use, such as wearing the belt under an arm or behind the back.
Production is scheduled to cover all seating positions, including rear seats. This development aligns with the increasing emphasis on camera-based systems for monitoring driver states, such as fatigue and distraction, driven by new EU mandates and Euro NCAP's safety vision.
The infrared signature is achieved through a specific material design within the webbing, utilizing yarns with distinct spectral properties. Infrared cameras can reliably detect the belt by recognizing how these materials reflect and absorb light, distinguishing it from clothing, skin, and the vehicle interior under various lighting conditions.
ZF LIFETEC will showcase the new infrared seat belt webbing at the AIRBAG 2026 event in Mannheim from December 8-10, 2026. The company has over 65 years of experience in passive safety systems.
