Zinnwald Lithium and Metso advance joint test program
Zinnwald Lithium and Metso are progressing in their joint test program to develop a lithium hydroxide production process for a planned battery facility in Germany.
Metso Oyj and Zinnwald Lithium Plc announced today they have advanced their joint test program focused on developing a lithium hydroxide production process.
The project aims to produce battery-grade lithium hydroxide for the European battery and automotive industries from the integrated Zinnwald Lithium project in Germany. This project is located in the heart of Europe's chemical and automotive industries.
Metso has been a partner to Zinnwald Lithium in its Definitive Feasibility Study since 2022. The collaboration has resulted in the development of a beneficiation process flowsheet, based on mineralogical studies and batch and locked cycle tests. The design basis for the tests has considered a mixture of two distinct lithium ore types, Alibite Granite and Quartz Mica Greisen.
The project is expected to enhance the resilience and sustainability of the electric vehicle battery supply chain in Europe, where over 30 new gigafactories are planned by 2030. The ultimate goal of the project is to establish a European lithium hydroxide operation adhering to the highest environmental standards.
