Meta Platforms is not required to pay a settlement after a 15-year-old plaintiff withdrew a lawsuit alleging that the company's platforms, including Instagram and Facebook, cause addiction in young users. The plaintiff, identified only by the initials R.K.C., filed the suit in Florida, claiming Meta's design features contributed to harm.
This case was considered a potential landmark lawsuit testing whether social media giants violate laws by designing addictive features. The withdrawal comes as Meta faces increasing scrutiny and legal challenges regarding the mental health impacts of its platforms on minors. Other major platforms like TikTok, Snap, and YouTube have previously settled similar claims with R.K.C. without admitting wrongdoing.
R.K.C.'s attorneys, Emily Jeffcott and Rahul Ravipudi, stated that while the overall litigation was progressing favorably, the minor was reluctant to endure a lengthy trial. Their statement indicated the plaintiff's desire to move past this phase of life and focus on recovery and rehabilitation.
Meta has maintained a strong defense against such allegations. A company spokesperson Reaffirmed Meta's stance that the claims were unfounded from the outset. This withdrawal allows Meta to exit the case without financial penalty, contrasting with other recent legal setbacks.
This development occurs amidst a broader legal trend where courts are examining social media companies' practices. Meta and Google (YouTube) have already been found liable in a separate test case concerning alleged concealment of product risks, resulting in significant damages awarded to a plaintiff. Another lawsuit in New Mexico also led to a substantial penalty against Meta, with further proceedings planned to address business structure changes.
