The rise in international oil prices, exacerbated by regional conflicts, and subsequent increase in gasoline prices, significantly dampened demand for gasoline and diesel vehicles. This led to a 10% year-on-year decline in sales for these vehicles, totaling 20.25 million units. China saw a 26% drop in sales, while Europe experienced a 13% decrease.

In contrast, electric vehicle (EV) sales surged by 12% to 6.87 million units during the same period. EVs now account for 17% of the total new car market, surpassing the commonly cited tipping point of 16% for mass adoption. Despite a 3% dip in China following reduced tax incentives, EVs saw substantial growth elsewhere.

Europe's EV market expanded by 32%, with EV sales exceeding gasoline-powered car sales for the first time in the first half of the year across 31 major European countries. Southeast Asia and Oceania also reported significant increases in EV adoption. Chinese manufacturers like Geely and BYD are expanding their exports, with Chinese brands holding 60% of the global EV and plug-in hybrid market.

Mobility Global forecasts that EVs will represent over 30% of all automotive production by 2030. While rising fuel costs have re-emphasized the lower running costs of EVs, government policies remain a significant factor in adoption rates. The trend suggests a continuing shift towards electric mobility, driven by both consumer preference and evolving market conditions.
